Offense Can't Back Marquez's Stellar Performance!
With rookie sensation Brailyn Marquez on the mound the Cubs looked to bounce back from last nights 4-3 loss. The Diamondbacks would oppose with Robbie Ray and this one would be an instant classic pitchers duel. Marquez was everything as advertised coming into this game throwing 5 no hit innings. Marquez came out of the gate throwing triple digits as he has in many games before this one. He looked to have both his slurve and change up working for him striking out 6 through 5 innings. On the other side Robbie Ray was sharp as well craving up batters and matching everything and more that Marquez was doing. The only mistake that Brailyn would make is hanging a slurve to Carson Kelly and watching him hit a towering shot to left field producing the lone run of the game for either team. The Cubs offense struggled once again as they scattered just 4 hits and never plated a run even with having runners at 1st and 2nd with 1 out in the 7th. Marquez went 7 strong innings giving up just 4 hits while striking out 9.
On the opposite side Robbie Ray showed flashes of his early self going 7 strong innings giving up just 2 hits and fanning 6. The D-Backs bullpen was once again lights out giving up just 2 hit and left closer picked up his 4th save of the year pitching another hitless inning.
During post game interview Javier Baez was asked about the recent offense struggles. "It's still early in the season, and a lot of teams go through a stretch like we have experienced the last two games. The offense will come and when it does a lot of teams better watch out." We were also able to get a word with Brailyn Marquez on his first loss of the season. "It happens you can't win every game you pitch. I had all of my pitches working for me and we missed some good opportunities on offense, but I have confidence in my team to bounce back and be better than we have been."
Next up will be the series finale with the Cubs sending Adbert Alzolay to the mound and the D-Backs will send Luke Weaver.
