Darvish Struggles Early on as Cubs Late Rally Falls Short
After splitting the series in Arizona the Cubs headed to LA to take on the Dodgers in a start of a three game set. The Cubs would send ace Yu Darvish to the mound in hopes of getting off to a great start. The game was scheduled to start at 7:10pm but was delayed an hour due to heavy rain. The rain ended up lightening up a little but was still coming down when the first pitch was thrown.
The Dodgers came in as one of the hottest teams in baseball and they would show it right away in the 2nd inning with Cody Bellinger making Darvish pay leaving a hanging slider over the plate putting it over the center field wall. Th Cubs however would tie the game back up in the top of the 3rd by manufacturing a run on two hits. After working a scoreless 123 bottom of the 3rd and failing to capitalize on a walking in the top of the 4th. Darvish would get railroaded in the bottom of the 4th as the Dodgers would light Darvish up getting 5 runs off him. While Darvish only gave up 1 homer run, he did get torched for 7 hits and 7 runs in only 4 innings of work. Two of the Dodger runs in the 4th would come on rookie Gavin Lux's 2RBI double. Darvish's night would be over after giving up a double in the bottom of the 5th throwing 95 pitches. In his place was Alec Mills who worked 3 innings giving up no runs on just 2 hits and striking out 4.
On the opposite side of the ball the Cubs couldn't figure out young Dodger pitcher Yaisel Sierra. He would go 8 strong innings giving up just 2 runs and striking out 6. The only blemish to Sierra's line came in the 3rd giving up 2 hits that lead to a run and a 8th inning 2 out home run to Ian Happ. Heading into the 9th with the Dodgers leading 2-5 they would send in Pedro Baez to close the door. The Cubs however had other plans as Rizzo and Bryant would go back to back trimming the lead to just 3. After getting Javier Baez to fly out to deep center. The Dodger would bring in closer Kenley Jansen to ensure a comeback would fall short. He would get the next two batters to pop out and ground out to lock up his 12th save of the season.
After the game reporters met with skipper David Ross who had this to say when asked about his teams performance "this was a tough loss to take after playing so well in the last couple games in Arizona. We need to be more patient at the plate and wait for our pitch, we were just swinging at to many pitches out of the zone which allowed Sierra to make us play his game rather the other way around." They were also able to catch up with Darvish who had his interrupter there to translate. "I just couldn't get my secondary pitches to do as I wanted, the rain was a little bit of a factor trying to keep the ball dry, but thats no excuse and i have to get better to help this team win."
Next up with be a great pitching match-up that will feature Kyle Hendricks for the Cubs and Walker Buehler for the Dodgers.
