Cubs drop 2 of 3 to D-Backs, but take 3 out of 4 in Pittsburgh!
After sweeping the Pirates at home and moving to 4-2 on the year. The Cubs looked to host the D-Backs for a 3 game set. Things didn’t look very well as the Cubs lost game 1 of the series in a nail biting 5-6 final. In game 2 of the series it looked like anything that could go wrong did as the Cubs committed 3 errors and it would cost them the game losing 7-4. The Cubs went into the third and final game of the series hoping to at least finish the home stand 4-2. They sent rookie sensation Brailyn Marquez to the mound and he wouldn’t disappoint. Marquez went 6 strong innings giving up only 3 hits and 1ER. The Cubs would win the finale 5-3.
After a 4-2 home stand the Cubs looked to have better luck on the road for a 4 game series against the Pirate whom they swept when the came to Wrigley. The Cubs would pick up where they left off with a 5-2 victory in game 1. Alzolay was the winning pitcher and looked very sharp. Game 2 was a different story as Darvish struggled to get through 5 innings as the Cubs lost 4-1. Game 3 saw Kyle Hendricks look very sharp pitching strong and the Cubs cruised to a 6-1 victory. In the series finale Jon Lester pitched 6 solid innings striking out 7 and only giving up 2 runs as the Cubs wrapped up the series win with a 6-3 score backed by Kris Bryant hitting for the cycle. Marking the first Cubs player to do so since Mark Grace in May 9, 1993.
After his career day Kris Bryant met up with reporters and had this to say: "you always hope to put your name up there with the greats. Just for me to be mentioned in the same category as Mark Grace is special to me. This is definitely a day I won't soon forget."
