Could the offense continue the dominance in game 2?
After finally getting the offense rolling in game 1 of this four game set in San Diego. Were the Cubs able to continue the magic and continue their dominance of the Padres? The Cubs would look for Ace Yu Darvish to turn in a great performance and he would not disappoint.
Darvish would carve the opposing line up striking out 7 over 7 stellar innings of work. Darvish carried a no hitter into the 5th inning before the Padres would get their first base hit, but that is all it would be. Darvish would only surrender 2 hit over the 7 innings of work and no runs allowed. The Cubs would jump out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a walk by lead off man Hoerner and a RBI double by Baez. Starter for the Padres would settle in after the first allowing not runs till the 5th thanks to Baez's RBI single. Davies would get pulled after 5 innings of work allowing just 2 runs on 3 hits and striking out 5. Top of the 6th saw Jason Heyward break out of his slump sending a two run bomb to deep right field for his 4th homer on the young season.
The young Padres club wouldn't go quietly tho as rookie Allen Cordoba would connect on a Brandon Morrow fast ball and send it just over the left field wall bring the Padres within 3 runs. That however would be the end of any kind of rally as dominating rookie closer Ryan Jensen would come in the 9th. He would pitch a hit-less 9th while striking out 2 for his 19th save of the young season.
First year manager David Ross had this to say after the game "This what we are capable every-time out there. We know how good we can be when everything falls in place and it feel good to be back in first place. We know the next game will be no easy task with their ace being on the mound and we wouldn't expect it any other way.
