Could the Cubs clinch the series in finale or would they split?
The Cubs headed into the series finale with a chance to win their first series in two weeks. After taking the first two games of the series they had dropped the third game in extras. The Cubs would send veteran lefty Jon Lester to the mound to secure a series win. Opposing him would be Dinelson Lamet for the Padres.
The Cubs would open the games scoring in the 2nd inning launching back to back homers from Heyward and Caratini. This unfortunately be the only scoring the Cubs would see out of an offense that was put in check from starter Lamet. Lester would struggle with his command early on walking 3 batter one which would come around to score making the game a one run game. Early in the 6th the Padres would get a runner on 2nd with one out and Lester would serve up a meat ball to Machado and he would put it in the cheap seats to give the Padres a 3-2 lead. This would spell the end of the line for Lester as he went 6.1 innings giving up 3 runs on 5 hits and striking out just 4 batters.
Dinelson Lamet on the other hand was purely dominate all game outside of 2 mistakes in the 2nd inning. He held the Cubs offense to just 3 hits over 7 innings of work and striking out 8 batters. This was a big confidence boast for him after a rough outing in his previous game.
While this game wasn't a total lost as the Brewers loss as well which continued the tie for first in the national league central division. The Cubs will have an off day as they travel to Pittsburgh for a 3 game set with division rival Pirates.
