Can the Cubs rebottle some 2016 magic? Can they get off to a better start than 2019?
With a new owner/GM Cody McBride can the Cubs get back to greatness? It will take a hot start along with everyone playing up to there potential if the Cubs are to make a run. The Cubs start off the season on the road in Milwaukee. While the pitching shows great signs, the offense struggled on the road trip as the Cubs could only manger to win one game out of the three game opener. Both Darvish and Hendricks pitched good games respectively, but the offense could not provide them with enough production. Jon Lester got the win on the finale of the series. He pitched 7 strong innings giving up 0ER.
As the Cubs headed home for the home opener they looked to bounce back against division rival Pirates. Marquez and Alzolay were as great as advertised. Both earning the win in the first 2 of a 3 game series. Rookie closer Ryan Jensen has been great thus far coming out of the pen and locking up 2 saves so far with only allowing 1 hit in 2IP. Also he is 2 for 2 in save opportunities. In the series finale the Cubs would lock up the sweep by a score of 2-1. Darvish was pitching like an ace going 7 strong innings and the bullpen locking up the save. Jensen locked up save number 3 of the season. The Cubs move on to 4-2 on the year. After a great start to the season all-star first baseman Anthony Rizzo was interviewed about his teams hot start. "It is never great to lose the first two of the season, but coming back home in front of these amazing fans and sweeping a division rival makes the start of the season that much sweeter. We still have some issues to work out offensively, but our pitching staff has been amazing to start the season. They have kept us in every single game and thats really all we could ask for" Rizzo said.
New owner Cody McBride was also taking questions after the sweep of the Pirates. "This is exactly the type of start i was hoping we would have from a pitching stand point. I know the bats will come around, and sometime it takes about 50-100 at bats to get your swing. As many fans that follow the Cubs know that as the weather starts to get warmer so does the Cubs offense. I could very well see this team being a 90+ win team this season and seasons to come" said McBride.
